PROJECT LEADER

DR. YOHANNES HAILE-SELASSIE is a world renowned expert in early hominin evolution. After three years of survey in northern Afar region of Ethiopia, he located fossiliferous site and began conducting systematic fieldwork in the Woranso-Mille area, forming the Woranso-Mille Paleoanthropological Research Project. He brought together geologists, paleoanthropologists, and paleontologists from the United States, Europe, and Africa to help elucidate the human fossil record in this part of the Afar region. In collaboration with colleagues, Dr. Haile-Selassie has published his research in some of the most prominent scientific journals in the world, including Nature, Science, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, as well as technical specialist journals, such as Journal of Human Evolution, American Journal of Physical Anthropologists, and Journal of Mammalian Evolution. For his groundbreaking discoveries that is transforming our understanding of human origins, he was named one of Nature's 10  in 2019. He is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Associate Fellow of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Haile-Selassie is currently Director of the Institute of Human Origins (IHO) and Professor in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University.
